Black History Month 2024: Building Bridges, Unlocking Potential, Creating Change

Presented by AWWATF UK & Men of TRAD

Every October, Black History Month in the UK serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, brilliance, and cultural contributions of Black communities. In 2024, AWWATF UK brought this celebration to life in Glasgow and London (partnering with Alive Church, London) with a meaningful theme: “Building Bridges, Unlocking Potential, Creating Change.”

This year’s event spotlighted the unique experiences of Black men in the United Kingdom, focusing on their historical journey, current systemic challenges, and the visionary steps being taken to empower future generations.

A Legacy of Strength and Contribution

Black History Month, first launched in the UK in 1987 by activist Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, is a time to honour the achievements and sacrifices of Black Britons across generations. The event in Glasgow paid homage to pioneers like:

  • Mary Seacole – a trailblazing nurse during the Crimean War

  • Olaudah Equiano – whose writing fueled the abolitionist movement

  • Claudia Jones – civil rights leader and founder of Notting Hill Carnival

  • Diane Abbott – the first Black woman elected to UK Parliament

  • Dr. Harold Moody – advocate for racial justice and healthcare equity

Their legacies set the tone for a gathering rooted in pride, identity, and transformation.

Men of TRAD: Uplifting Black Men Across the UK

At the heart of the celebration was Men of TRAD (Transformed and Renowned African Descendants), an AWWATF UK initiative that offers mentorship, professional development, entrepreneurial support, and holistic family well-being for Black men.

With the ethos of “Made to Evolve and Nurture,” Men of TRAD has become a vital hub for men navigating social, economic, and institutional challenges while striving for personal and communal success.

Facing Systemic Challenges Head-On

The event featured interactive discussions and presentations on the persistent barriers affecting Black men in the UK, including:

  • Educational exclusion and unequal academic placement

  • Workplace discrimination and underemployment

  • Health inequalities, mental health stigma, and reduced life expectancy

  • Over-policing and criminal justice disparities

  • Negative media representation and under-representation in leadership

These realities, backed by data from sources like the ONS, NHS, and Lammy Review, served as a foundation for creating strategies for change.

An Action Plan Rooted in Empowerment

Through workshops and panels, participants explored a four-step Action Plan:

  1. Identify – Pinpointing systemic issues and resource gaps

  2. Review – Listening to community voices and expert insights

  3. Plan – Developing strategic, measurable solutions

  4. Execute – Launching initiatives and collaborations for impact

From mentorship programs and business investment pathways to seminars and networking events, the emphasis was on practical, scalable change.

A Global Vision for a Stronger Community

With aspirations that stretch across the UK, Europe, Africa, and North America, AWWATF UK envisions a future where Black men and their communities thrive across borders. This includes tapping into global markets, building economic bridges, and fostering cultural pride rooted in heritage.

Join the Community

Black History Month 2024 was not just an event—it was a call to action.

Through Men of TRAD, AWWATF UK invites all allies, partners, and community members to walk with them on this journey. Together, we can build a society that celebrates identity, supports growth, and creates lasting change.
